U WINDSOR FUTURE STUDENTS - NOTE

I am writing to you today to provide you with two updates from the Office of Student Awards and Financial Aid at the University of Windsor.

First, it has come to our attention that students who have accepted an admission can only access the Entering Student Profile available on the 'Tasks' tile.  If this is the case, please follow the necessary steps as outlined on the profile tile.

Students who do not yet have an offer of admission or who have an offer of admission but have not yet accepted their offer of admission, do not currently have access to the 'Tasks' tile in order to complete their UWinAward Entering Student Profile.  We are working on the issue with IT.Please note that students can begin completing their templates and preparing their submission, including requesting letters of reference.  Please ensure that you allow sufficient time for your references to prepare your letters.  Once the issue has been resolved, your completed templates and letters of reference can be uploaded to your profile and submitted.

Students can access the templates on our website: http://www.uwindsor.ca/studentawards/entering-students . The files are under the heading "Awards for Entering Students." These files are the same ones found on the 'Tasks' Tile.

Second, our Office is offering free webinars during the day and in the evening to aid with the new UWinAward Entering Student Profile. These webinars will cover topics such as scholarships, bursaries, and awards offered at the University of Windsor, how to navigate the Entering Student Profile (for grade 12 students entering the University), and the various ways to budget for your post secondary education. March 31^st, 2019 is the deadline in which all entering student award profiles must be completed and submitted. This will help to ensure that students will be considered for the various forms of financial aid at the University of Windsor.

The webinars are intended to assist incoming students, parents, guardians, guidance counsellors and University of Windsor staff. FINANCIAL AID TERMS STUDENTS (AND PARENTS) SHOULD KNOW

Financial aid for postsecondary education comes in many forms: scholarships, bursaries, awards, etc. And sometimes these terms are used interchangeably.   Here is a list of financial aid terms and their definitions that students and parents may find helpful:   Academic award: An academic award may be granted in monetary or gift form. Bursary: A bursary is free money based on individual financial need. It may also include a minimum expectation of academic achievement or other criteria such as community involvement. Students are generally required to apply for bursaries outlining their need for financial resources in detail. Parents will also need to provide financial information. Oftentimes, bursary applications require that students apply for a government student loan before a bursary is granted. Bursaries are offered by postsecondary institutions, community organizations, and businesses. Scholarship: A scholarship is free money based on various criteria such as academic achievement, leadership, school and community involvement, athletics, or a combination of these elements. Many scholarships require an essay or essay responses. Financial need may be a consideration as well. Scholarships are offered by postsecondary institutions, community organizations, businesses, and high schools. Student loan: A Canada Student Loan is money that must be repaid when you finish school. (Note: Canada Student Loans and Grants are not available in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, or Quebec — they operate their own student loan programs.). Interest is charged on the loan amount. When you apply and qualify for student financial assistance through your province or territory of residence, you are automatically assessed for both Canada Student Loans and Canada Student Grants (except for the Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Permanent Disabilities which requires a separate application). Note: If you do qualify for a student loan, you can opt out of the loan, and receive the grant only.  Student grant: A Canada Student Grant is free money from the government based on financial need. Student line of credit: A student line of credit helps students pay for school expenses. You only have to pay back the money you borrow. You must pay interest on the amount you use every month.
